AFFECTS OF WAR ON TRAFFICKING

To date, there have been an nearly 4 million refugees–predominantly women and children who have fled their homes in search of safety, and estimates show there will likely be hundreds of thousands more in the coming days and weeks.

War and conflict are catastrophic and can increase the vulnerability of those seeking refuge. While anyone can be a victim of exploitation, traffickers are known to prey on those coming from another country, or a crisis situation. Traffickers may trick refugees into dangerous situations, like forced labor or sexual exploitation through deception, threats, or violence.

Since 2009, A21 has been working in Ukraine reaching vulnerable populations with prevention messages, identifying and assisting hundreds of victims, holding traffickers accountable for their crimes, and supporting survivors on their journey to healing and restoration–and we will continue to press on.

Right now, we are closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation to ensure the safety of our Ukraine staff and the survivors in our care. We are committed to doing what we’ve always done–working to providing vulnerable populations access to potentially life-saving resources, and survivors of human trafficking with the highest level of care possible.
